“This is at least the 14th time the bridge has been struck since reopening in August of 2020, after undergoing major repairs from a previous incident,” according to Lake County sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Chris Covelli.

This time the driver was a 73-year-old Nashville man operating a U-Haul box truck traveling eastbound on Robert Parker Coffin Road.

“He said he was following his GPS and didn’t see the signs restricting vehicle height as he approached the bridge,” Covelli said.

The top of the truck struck the bottom of the covered bridge causing significant damage to the vehicle, and getting it temporarily stuck at one end of the span, Covelli said.

The driver, who was not injured, was cited for disobeying a traffic control device, a state citation, and for a truck exceeding a maximum height of 8-foot-6 on a covered bridge, a Long Grove ordinance.

Village officials were on the scene after the accident inspecting the bridge.

The wood and metal bridge reopened on Aug. 14 with a community celebration. The bridge had been closed since June 27, 2018, when another box truck plowed into the bridge causing significant damage.

Within 24 hours of that August party, a chartered school bus carrying a group of golfers ran into the bridge, setting the stage for more than a dozen such accidents to come.

Earlier this year, village officials passed an ordinance amending the village code regarding local traffic restrictions on Robert Parker Coffin Road hoping the move would alert internet search engine map providers to update their software to not offer driving routes across the covered bridge.
