Saturday Shorter Routes

David Bergen

In addition to Mike and Anna’s 98/108 mile route, here are some shorter options. Note, all maps are based on riding from Lake Barrington Village Hall (LBVH) at the corner of Kelsey Rd and Old Barrington Road. If you start from the high school, it will add 5 miles in each direction. So the 98 mile route becomes 108 miles.

All rides begin at 7:00 at the High School or 7:30 at LBVH. The 7:00 ride will head to LBVH and meet up there for a group start.

The 33/44 will head out with the group but will split off after the Boger Bog rest stop and do the Bull Valley climb and return to the start for 33 or 44 miles

The 64/74 mile route will ride with the long group but turn around at our rest stop in Hebron. Same map as the long ride.

NOTE: these rides will be slightly slower than normal at the start as the longer riders will be going at a 100 mile pace and not a 33 mile pace. The more energetic riders can come to the front and do some pulls to burn off excess energy.

Perfect weather with light headwinds going out to Lake Geneva and tailwind on your return.

I just wanted to write a quick into message. I've moved into the Barrington area from the city about 3 years ago and have loved riding all the greats roads and hills. 99% of my riding is solo except for sponsored events and races so I figured it was time to expand and join a riding group. Looking forward to meeting new people on the group rides.

Dave did the route sheet for the long ride to Lake Geneva Saturday, thanks Dave!
There might be last minute tweaks so we'll stay together as a group.

First rest stop is in Hebron (at 32 miles) so be prepared with whatever you need, snacks, water, etc.
(Bushes available on the way for some people who can't wait, just sayin)

Also bring some $ for the additional 2 stops in case you need something or for any oddball issues.
Total mileage is anticipated @96 miles, avg pace 17-17.5, 3,800 ' of climbing.  We can add extra miles at end.
The group will ride together but is not necessarily a 'no-drop' ride.

Dave will post other ride options for this long weekend but I wanted to give enough time for you to consider a century ride.

Let me know if you are interested.

I just wanted to say thanks to all in the BBC family who supported me and my ride across Wisconsin to raise money for World Bicycle Relief (and check the box on my "ride across a state in one day" bucket list).

The words of encouragement and generous donations kept me focused and energized throughout the ride.  I had a great time hanging out with Matt Blue, who finished strong way ahead of me (as expected).  I also had the fortune of riding with some pro heavyweights from the Trek-Segafredo racing team.  Pics and update here:  http://teamwbr.worldbicyclerelief.org/jeff-mcrae/blog/made-it-ac

I'm pleased to say, we were able to raise enough as of this email to fund 41 bicycles for those in need.  Just think, 41 individuals, families and to some extent, communities all impacted by the power of a bike.  I'd still love to push that number up higher (my goal was 1 per mile, or 175 bikes) so will keep this site active if you know of others who have a heart for those in need and love cycling.  http://teamwbr.worldbicyclerelief.org/jeff-mcrae

Thanks also to Mike and Anna who did the Lake Geneva and back training rides the last few weekends to help me prepare, and to Chris who gave me lots of great advice from when he did the ride.

Appreciate all your support,

- Jeff

Fellow BBC cyclists,

This Saturday, I will be riding 175 miles across the state of Wisconsin in one day.  While this will be a huge physical challenge, I want to make this about more than just making it to the finish line.  I will also be riding for World Bike Relief, to help fund bicycles that change lives -- and I could us your help.

While I head out on Saturday to ride my bike against the sun and wind for personal challenge, there are individuals around the world that have a race against difficult trials on a daily basis fighting for access simply to basic needs.   And something as simple as a bike can change an individual's life forever, be it access to education, healthcare, or economic opportunity.

I saw this first hand when I was in Zambia serving in impoverished areas.  I saw World Bicycle Relief bikes being used to carry water, carry goods to market, serve as transportation for health care workers, and get kids to school far away.  It really makes me feel great, given my passion for cycling, to see bikes make such a big difference.

Please check out this video, which helps convey this more than my words ever could:  https://youtu.be/AXQQiFRhFYg

My goal is to raise enough to fund 1 bike for each mile I ride that day – 175 bikes.  These bikes cost about $147 each, so my goal is to raise $25,750.  While my goal is more than ambitious, I feel compelled to swing for the fence on this one because the stakes and human benefit are so high.  And as my wife often tells me, "go big or go home."  Any donation helps...whether it only be enough for a pedal, cassette, wheel, or an entire bike..these make a big difference in the lives of those less fortunate than we are.  So please help me help others.  To start things off, I have donated funding for the first 10 bikes.

You can support my effort for WBR here:   http://teamwbr.worldbicyclerelief.org/jeff-mcrae

As I face the ups and downs and fatigue Saturday, I’ll remember why I’m riding my bike for a purpose bigger than myself and continue to push through when the going gets tough, knowing that I’m helping change and save lives through the Power of Bicycles.

Thank you so much for your support,

Jeff McRae

PS.  Please feel free to forward this to anyone you know who has a passion for riding and helping serve those in need.

I  so missed not being able to do that ride with you all due to a work conference.  I sat inside all day, but I was dry.  Hmmmmm......

Thanks for sharing.  Cool stuff.  Greg, you need to frame this and place it in a place of prominence in your house. I'm sure Sue would love it.

Good job to all of you "warriors" who rode through the rain Sunday.

Hi, All.  Active Trans has asked me to pass along the information below about upcoming bike and pedestrian summits to discuss bike issues.  These folks do good work and the summits will give you an opportunity to register your thoughts in a way that will count.

Bill, wondered if you or any other riders from Barrington might be interested in attending.  Active Trans is gathering people to discuss bike safety in the burbs.  Imagine some of your riders have stories to share.  Be great to hear from some of them.  Please pass this along and have people connect with Maggie at Active Trans, or with me.  I'm hoping to go to the Oct 21 meeting in Schaumburg.

Hi everyone,

As you likely know, in most suburban communities, getting around on a bicycle and on foot is often difficult and sometimes treacherous. As a result, many people who would like to bike and walk more often tend to avoid doing so.

The good news is that we can change this. We can create suburban communities that have high-quality, low-stress bike lanes, sidewalks and multi-use trails that could connect you to local shops, work, school and neighboring communities. But it’ll take some work.

To get us there, we are excited to announce the launch of Bike Walk Every Town, our new advocacy training program for the suburbs.

Bike Walk Every Town is designed to mobilize and support grassroots leaders from across the region. We’d like to give you the tools and access to resources you need to improve biking, walking, and transit in your community.

The program begins in September and October with our Suburban Advocacy Summits hosted in each suburban region.

The Summits will offer tools to help you develop an advocacy campaign, direction and assistance in advocating for better walking and biking policies, and opportunities to network with other like-minded individuals in your region.

Change starts with you. If you’re up for the challenge, we invite you to register for one of our free kick-off Summits to be held throughout the region.
  • North Shore: Saturday, September 23
  • West: Saturday, October 7
  • Northwest: Saturday, October 21
  • South: Saturday, October 28
The Summits are open to anyone who is interested in attending, however, space is limited.

If you are unable to attend the Summit scheduled in your region, you are welcome to register for one of the other Summits. If you are interested in registering or would like to learn more, visit activetrans.org/BikeWalkEveryTown or email Maggie@....
