share the road control #88953

mr.kevin.mitchell@...

I contacted the IDOT, or DMV, or whoever it was.

It does not look like they have a Share The Road sign.

Just this caution sign. I'm guessing there needs to be some kind of a cautionary reason for them to put it in. Not sure how this would apply to BH streets.

I'd have thought that "SHARE THE ROAD" was the better, deeper message to every stakeholder, but I doubt that you will get any significant numbers of residents to post anything to add to the clutter...

Hi, All:

By now most of you have seen the multitude of signs in Barrington Hills protesting the concept of adding one or more bike lanes over time on village roads. Kevin Mitchell was good enough to post a photo of one recently. In addition, there was a story published last week in the Barrington Courier Review about a tempestuous public meeting where a number of residents shouted down the idea of adding a bike lane on Haeger's Bend Road, which the village cannot afford to rebuild out of its budget, but can rebuild with state or federal money.

The story also quoted a resident who described cyclists as "insects".

I felt it necessary to respond in some fashion that encouraged dialogue with the cycling community, yet made it clear that "we" aren't going away. My goal as always is to try to reach the majority of residents who are not opposed in principle to any cyclists in BH and wish to end the constant internal and expensive BH strife. The link below is to my letter to the editor that was published yesterday, at least online.

If any of you are interested in learning Cyclocross, there is a clinic this September.

It's not free, nor is it inexpensive. I took what I believe is this same course last year. It was an all day clinic that was very helpful.

There will be a Monday night ride at 5:45 starting at the Lutheran Church on Dundee/Hillside.
This is a "no-drop" ride for 25 miles, avg pace is 15-16 mph.
Reed will be your gracious host.

Below is a link to an article about climbing at the proper pace and what 'not to do' -  it pointed out all the things I do wrong!
I hope you enjoy it and find it helpful.

Interesting to watch the cadence and the speed. Beginning riders should note the high cadence while climbing. The first half of the video is climbing a long hill and the second half is a sprint to the traffic light.

2014 Barrington Honor Ride

billgotfryd

Hi, All. I received the following reminder about the 2014 Barrington Honor Ride. For those who road in the past, please note that it has been moved up to August 17, and is departing from Citizen Park, rather than downtown Barrington this year.

Bill

Hello! We want to personally invite you and your riding club to our
Citizens Park

In support of the cycling rehabilitation program for our wounded active and veteran military members at Ride2recovery we are hosting a 20, 30 and 45 mile ride to raise funds and awareness on Sunday August 17th at Citizens Park in Barrington, IL.

Please consider joining rehabilitating veterans, out of town guests, ride2recovery representatives and members of the community in supporting this great mission. So many of our wounded face great physical and mental challenges. R2R provides these heroes with opportunities to overcome these challenges through cycling. Raleigh bikes custom tailors equipment to an individuals disability.

The benefits of the camaraderie and personal growth obtained through the sport of cycling is immeasurable but we can come together in numbers to show our support for our veteran and wounded heroes. Please register at Active.com

Thank you in advance for your interest!

Gear

mr.kevin.mitchell@...

I have one of these. It's expensive, but it works great for washing your bike and lubing your chain. You take off your rear wheel and put this on in it's place. It not only holds your chain in place while you clean, but it allows you to spin it freely.

I found out about it at a cyclocross training camp I went to last year.

Love your sense of humor Mike.
I would adjust jersey to say that recording is being transmitted to police enforcement though.  Does not need to be true as long as it protects our wonderful minority.

Great thoughts Mary.  Yes, it's good for Us to hear.

Main thing to remember is cameras will not help from becoming a paraplegic.  We will ALWAYS loose a fight with anything 400x our weight.

Be safe. It's always better to be wrong than dead.

Mike and all,

Thanks Mike for the info on the camera's! They are a good idea.

However, the idea of the jersey sounds antagonistic to drivers and I really don't think that would help. Even verbal altercations back and forth in my opinion are only escalating the problem.  I realize that everyone may not agree but I say let these cameras speak for themselves and keep any conflict low.

Yesterday I read about a driver, (...the mayor from a St Louis suburb) and a cyclist getting into a verbal altercation and it escalated to where the driver then purposely ran into the cyclist (although the mayor claims the cyclist was grabbing onto his car.. yeah right!)

Also, I got together with friends a couple of weeks ago. One friend lives in Barrington and I was asking her about her view of the cyclists.  She says she pretty much stays out of their way because they are very serious about cycling which she is fine with, she just stays out of their way and avoids those areas on certain mornings. But she also said that she did have a cyclist pretend he was shooting at her car repeatedly one time when she did nothing to provoke that.

So my thought is keep any conflict or antagonism low / avoid it as much as possible. Yes, there can be jerks for drivers but there can also be jerks for cyclists as well.

I hope you all don't mind me sharing my opinion and I usually don't email the whole group back because no one wants to be bombarded with emails However, with the escalation between cyclists and drivers in the Barrington area, I think this needed to be said, even though everyone may not agree.

Other than that... happy riding and yes, those camera are a great idea and I appreciate you sharing that info. I think those will help!

Mary,

Interesting take on the jersey’s being antagonistic. Since the unit looks like a taillight, my thought on that was it would at least drivers know that their bad behavior is being captured and could be used as proof which is generally lacking for these situations.

Mike
